Etymology

borrowed from French analyste "mathematician skilled in analysis," probably by haplology from *analysiste, from analyse or analysie analysis + -iste -ist entry 1

Note: French analyste would appear to be a derivative of analyser, a counterpart to analyze in English, but the French verb is apparently attested several decades later than the agent noun.
